Let’s take it back to basics – today we are clarifying what exactly the paleo diet is for you.
Paleo = Eat Real Food. No additives, preservatives, transfats, or processed junk. Just good, fresh, clean, healthy grub.
Some may say that paleo is “eating like the caveman did” which in essence is true – if you can’t hunt or gather it (ie. you have to buy it in a processed form) then it’s off the list. The caveman analogy is a great starting and reference point – but there is also a “paleo 2.0” movement which argues the inclusion of dairy products and saturated fats (among other things) because science, anthropology, and common sense have moved us on a lot since the paleolithic days. As you can see – there are different versions of what is and isn’t paleo out there, which can make things hard for a beginner!
PICK + PALEO believes that the foods we put into our bodies should promote optimal health and wellbeing. It’s as simple as that. At the end of the day, if YOU don’t have a strong negative reaction to dairy and you want to include it in YOUR version of paleo, then we fully support that.
For the majority of our posts we will refer to foods that are considered YES items on the paleo diet – but we understand there is a grey area out there too.
The basis of any paleo diet includes the following:
- Meats – preferably lean meat, grass fed or organic if possible
- Fish/ seafood
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Nuts and seeds
- Healthy fats and oils – olive, walnut, flaxseed, macadamia, avocado, coconut
- Legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas, peanuts)
- Refined sugar
- Refined vegetable oils
Lean Proteins – to build healthy bones, strong muscles, and support immunity. Protein helps you stay fuller for longer. Where possible, buy grass-fed/ organic rather than grain fed animal products.
Fruits and Vegetables – rich in antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and help decrease the chance of developing diseases including cancer, diabetes, and neurological decline.
Healthy Fats – think nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil, and fish. Diets rich in monounsaturated fats and Omega-3 fats dramatically reduce the instances of obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and cognitive decline.
