If you are paleo and you haven’t heard of Melissa Joulwan, her blog, and her mouthwatering cookbooks…then you must REALLY be a caveman hiding under a rock!
Well Fed: Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat (and it’s second edition, Well Fed 2) is constantly open in my kitchen, with its food splattered pages and sticky cover speak for itself. It’s my go-to cookbook for delicious paleo AND Whole30 recipes, and a must have for those wanting to increase their meal time repertoire.
The paperback book is packed with over 115 recipes – all made with no grains, legumes, soy, sugar, dairy or alcohol. Melissa is keen on using herbs, spices and sauces to generate different flavours, so a lot of the recipes require you to have a fair amount of pantry products – but I found it a good way to increase my knowledge of how to use them in creative ways.
The majority of recipes are super simple, without compromising on taste. A few do involve slightly more technical experience in the kitchen, but on the flipside, Melissa also goes into depth on the basics of a paleo diet. She has pages which talk about your weekly shop, your kitchen essentials, and she describes how to undertake a “weekly cookup” to save time and ensure you have ready-to-go food for snacks and meals. We love her Hot Plates concept, where you mix and match basic ingredients and grocery staples with spices and seasonings to create delicious every day meals. The whole idea of quick + easy + delicious really resonates with us!
Well Fed has sections on:
What is Paleo, the yes and the no list
Necessary kitchen tools
Spices and staples to keep in your pantry
Sample grocery lists
Online resources for spices & meats
Online resources for information on Paleo eating
And the Well Fed Recipes are broken down in to:
Sauces and seasonings (we highly recommend her method for making paleo mayonnaise!)
Veggies and Salads
Our PICKS from Well Fed:
- Moroccan Meatballs (stop what you are doing and make this NOW. It doesn’t get ANY better!)
- Citrus Carnitas
- Pad Thai
- Rogan Josh
- Baba Ghanoush
We like the fact that this book doesn’t include paleo brownies or cakes – instead, it recreates flavours from your favourite international cuisines. Think Italian meatballs, Moroccan spices, Sri Lankan curry, Lebanese and Greek koftas. And every single recipe (except for one!) is Whole30 compliant too – meaning you can no longer complain about having to eat boring food on Whole30.
Melissa doesn’t take life too seriously either, and her book contains plenty of her dry wit and sarcasm. Yep, there are even jokes inside the recipes!
Well Fed is available for purchase from Book Depository.
