I first came across Wilder and Hunt on my birthday two years ago, when a friend and I made a plan to go to the St Heliers store in Auckland and try their already-famous smoothies. We were not disappointed at all, and thus my love of their Rich Chocolate Elixir smoothie began. Packed with raw cacao, strawberries, bananas, unsweetened almond milk, coconut cream, organic almond butter, ground flaxseed, and agave nectar it’s like a guilt-free McDonalds thickshake!
So obviously, I was really looking forward to introducing Leah to Wilder and Hunt and their new store/cafe in Ponsonby. We headed there on a busy Monday (in fact, the very same Monday we launched this website!) and spent what ended up being a few hours sitting at their long tables under a skylight, making plans and chatting, while the attentive staff filled our water glasses.
We both ordered lunch from their daily menu, although we considered the delicious cabinet food first. Because Wilder and Hunt specialise in nutrient-dense real food (no grains, no sugars, no artificial anything) you can be sure most of the options are paleo – if not Whole30 too. If you have any questions, the staff are really helpful and will let you know the breakdown of ingredients. The cabinet is filled with colourful salads, sandwiches made with paleo bread, fresh meat and fish…. and a number of amazing sweet treats.
I had the apricot chicken taco and it was so flavoursome. The chicken was deliciously marinated in apricot sauce and was incredibly tender. Teamed with guacamole and a spicy coconut cream and wrapped in a red cabbage leaf ‘taco’, this was definitely something I’d order again.
Leah had the chicken nachos and we were both impressed with how crunchy the kumara chips are – I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve tried to get super-crispy kumara chips and just ended up with a soggy pile.
Wilder and Hunt also stock a range of impressive clean eating products, including granola, coconut yoghurt in a variety of flavours, frozen meals, and paleo flours and baking essentials. We purchased a number of different products that we’ll be able to tell you about very soon!
