Welcome to PICK + PALEO, your ultimate guide to paleo and Whole30 in New Zealand.
We are Alisha and Leah, two paleo and Whole30 enthusiasts. Over the past few years, we’ve explored our own health and nutrition and bonded over our love of real, fresh, whole foods. With most of the resources online being for a North American audience, we really struggled to find a local resource for New Zealanders – so we decided to create our own.
Our mission here at PICK + PALEO is to share our favourite picks – whether that be new products or brands on the market, resources and cookbooks, cafes and restaurants offering paleo options, or home, kitchen and skincare that falls into an eco-conscious category. We want to focus on what’s available in New Zealand, for New Zealanders.
I first read about the Whole30 via Leah’s blog, and was both intrigued and amazed by her experience and results. However, for a good year I kept thinking ‘there’s no way I could stick to something so strict for 30 whole days’ until I finally got over that very minor detail and undertook my first Whole30 in February 2014. Despite working in the cake-obsessed publishing industry at the time, I completed it with flying colours and results I was very proud of. I gained energy, lost weight, and learned a lot about food and the way my body processes it.
Since then, I’ve completed two more Whole30s and changed my diet completely. I love shopping at markets for fresh veg and artisan meats without yucky chemicals, and I love cooking up new flavour combinations. Plus, my paleo banana loaf is now my go-to baking recipe when I visit friends – a much better treat than afghan biscuits!
When I’m not managing PICK + PALEO, I’m blogging at the wineglass manifesto, listening to podcasts, running, honing my photography skills, and spending way too much time on Instagram.
I first came across the Whole30 in 2011, and undertook my initial 30 day nutritional reset in January 2013. Previous to this I had suffered from chronic stress, adrenal fatigue, IBS, eczema and a whole host of other health problems. Switching my diet was revelationary – I knew I was lactose intolerant, but through the Whole30 I discovered how I could be an even better version of myself simply by altering what went into my mouth. I slept better, I was a ball of energy, I lost weight…and I just glowed with healthiness.
Fast forward to now, and I’ve just completed my 6th Whole30. I’m a total convert. I like to do a Whole30 twice a year – and along the way I’ve inspired and motivated many friends, colleagues, family members and even my sceptical husband to give it a go. I love trying new recipes and experimenting with my extensive herb and spice collection. My spiraliser is my favourite kitchen accessory.
As well as running PICK + PALEO, I’m blogging at Naturally Leah where I write about fitness, food and finding your best life. I enjoy running, hiking and yoga, travelling, and a good coffee.
